BIOGAS PLANTS AT CATTLE FARMS

Ideal raw material for biogas

Cow manure is one of the most significant greenhouse pollutants.  Biogas plants benefit the environment by  capturing methane and producing electric power.

Cow manure is a major source of greenhouse gas emissions, particularly methane. Biogas plants help mitigate this environmental impact by capturing methane from manure and converting it into renewable energy, such as electricity. This not only reduces harmful emissions but also provides a sustainable energy source for the farm.

Cattle manure is one of the best raw materials for biogas production. Unlike other feedstocks, cow manure naturally contains all the nutrients and microorganisms necessary for bacteria to thrive and produce biogas, without requiring any additional inputs. In fact, cow manure already contains the essential bacteria needed for the process.

A biogas plant using manure has a relatively simple design. However, just like with other substrates, it is important for the designer and builder to carefully consider the specific characteristics of the manure to ensure optimal performance of the system.

Animal keeping and manure removal

  • Pure natural manure

The ideal raw material for biogas production is pure cow manure, free from bedding or water. This type of manure is typically produced when cows are kept on rubber mats or paved floors, with manure removed mechanically.

  • Cow manure with straw or sawdust bedding

When animals are kept on bedding, and manure is removed mechanically, the resulting manure contains straw or sawdust. To process this type of manure for biogas production, it should be passed through a shredder, or the bedding material should be shredded before being mixed with the manure.

  • Cow manure flushed with water

In this method, manure is flushed with water and transported via pipes. While this system facilitates easy removal, it dilutes the manure with water, leading to increased volume for biogas reactors. Additionally, it may require extra heat to warm the slurry during colder months, raising energy consumption.

  • Cow manure with sand bedding

Biogas production from manure with sand bedding is possible, but it requires the installation of additional equipment, such as hydrocyclones, to separate the sand from the slurry before it enters the reactor.

  • Dry cow manure with soil impurities

In some systems, cattle are kept on compacted soil. It is essential that the manure collection process avoids capturing excess soil, as this could impact the efficiency of biogas production. Among these methods, keeping cows on rubber mats or paved floors, with pure manure and mechanical removal, is the most efficient for biogas production. While the other methods are also feasible, they tend to be slightly more expensive to process.
