BIOGAS PLANTS AT DAIRIES

Biogas vs. dried whey

Milk whey is a dairy waste product. At the same time, milk whey is also a raw material for biogas production in biogas plants.

Milk whey, a byproduct of dairy processing, is an excellent raw material for biogas production. This dairy waste can be efficiently utilized in biogas plants to generate renewable energy.

Whey, a byproduct of dairy production, can be managed in several ways: discharged onto filtration fields or into sewage, dried, or processed into biogas. Converting whey into biogas is an environmentally sustainable option, generating renewable energy while reducing waste, compared to drying, which may require more energy and result in a lower-value product.

Methods of disposal

  • 01. Discharge to filtration fields or into sewage

This environmentally problematic method of disposal has largely been phased out by most enterprises, as it poses significant environmental risks.

  • 02. Whey drying

Drying whey is a cheaper option compared to establishing a biogas plant. However, processes like evaporation or vacuum drying lead to higher energy costs. While whey powder is in demand, its market price has decreased as more dairies invest in drying equipment, increasing competition.

  • 03. Biogas plant

Many companies are now focused on being environmentally responsible. Processing whey into biogas offers dairies an opportunity to transition away from natural gas or fuel oil, reducing operating costs. Biogas can completely replace natural gas in boilers. For whey processing, vertical CSTR technology is ideal, as it efficiently handles this substrate for biogas production.

Biome Biogas is committed to promoting sustainable energy and infrastructure solutions, helping clients harness the power of biogas while contributing to environmental conservation.
